How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
Approx 2  years

Do you play any other instruments?
Used to play a trumpet in the school band, tried to play again but ran out of puff!

Tell us about your Ukulele.
I started with a soprano and got talked into a Keoloha, easier to learn to play.  On WUG Monday night I sat next to David and really, really liked his travel flat Kala uke.  I fell in love with it and bought one ready to go caravaning with.  Third time lucky!

What is your favourite song to play?
I like lots of songs, I like songs with a good melody and beat.  One day I want to play open mic to play Belfast Mill but I will need a back up choir!!  Also Pearly Shells uses all our senses.

What is your least favourite chord to play?
Eh?  Any chords that take 4 fingers over 4 frets, like uke yoga – stretch!!

Why ukulele?
Uke players have such fun and is a good anti aging device.  A challenge in dress ups.

Do you play any other instruments?
I was a church organist at Warrnambool Church of Christ for several years and played guitar with “South Western Harmonicas” in the early ’60’s along with WUG’s Bev and Dulcie.  My sister and I (AKA the Haberfield Sisters) started singing on 3YB’s Talent Time because you got a free record.  We toured with the 3YB Concert Party to raise funds for the new (now old) hospital, from Camperdown to Portland.  I used to play banjo mandolin and piano accordion.  (only not at the same time).

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
I have been playing the ukulele just on a year now. Llyn and Ian told me about the group and so I came along for a look see, was immediately handed a ukulele by Annie and the rest is history!

Do you play any other instruments?
I had a bit of a try with guitar in my teens but was not very serious. I have always loved music and enjoy Jazz, Country,Classical,Blues, Rock and Roll, and Bluegrass.

Tell us about your Ukulele.
My Ukulele is the Morel brand, and that is all I really know about it!

What is your favourite song to play?
I have a few songs I really like to play, I am a bit of a softie for a romantic tune

What is your least favourite chord to play?
As I have small hands some chords are difficult to play….so I try and cheat and let others carry me, not so successful when I am playing on my own though!

Why ukulele?
I enjoy playing the Ukulele as it is achievable, or that is my hope. The group have a lot to do with the enjoyment of playing and give me the drive to keep trying when I fall flat, you only need to ask for help and it is there. Love Monday nights.

Bought my first one about 5 years ago, but only got semi-serious, coincidently, a couple of weeks after WUG started.

Do you play any other instruments?
Play guitar as badly as I play Uke

Tell us about your Ukulele.
It’s a wooden thing, with plastic looking strings (4 of them)

What is your favourite song to play?
Whatever I’m learning at the time. “Lovebug Itch” last week— ”Roadhouse Blues” this week.
Though I’ve always got a soft spot for “5 foot2”

What is your least favourite chord to play?
E

Why ukulele?
I thought, erroneously, that because it only had 2/3 of the number of strings of a guitar, that it would be 2/3 as easy to play. By the time I realised I was wrong, I was hooked.

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
I have been playing Uke for about 18 months.

Do you play any other instruments?
I have played a bit of guitar on and off for ages without ever having gone much past 3 chords.

Tell us about your Ukulele.
I have 2 Ukes – one concert Makala Banjelele and a Kala Tenor “Slim line” travel Uke. I am going to Austria and Switzerland in September this year and the Travel Uke will be coming with me. It has a surprisingly big sound for such a slim instrument. I am now however interested in looking for a steel string acoustic Uke with pick up and cut away (for some my blistering lead and blues breaks) – if such a thing currently exists ?

What is your favourite song to play?
My favourite song is more a question of what I am liking currently, or what I am trying to lean on Uke or Guitar. At the moment I am trying to learn a bit of Tom Petty , and am planning on playing Hey St Peter at next open mike if there is room. If I had to pick an all time (current) favourite song it would probably be “Because the Night” – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, ‘Somebody to love” by jefferson Airplane – the wonderful Grace Slick on vocals is a close second – not as hard to play as you might think (and not that different from Because the night if it comes down to it).

What is your least favourite chord to play?
Anything that involves more than 2 fingers

Why ukulele?
Anne and Kevin came over to a social event at my house 18 months ago where various people borought instruments . They brought their Ukes , and I thought it looked like lots of fun. I am probably now playing more Uke than guitar. I recently started putting a capo on the 5th fret of the guitar and playing the top 4 strings only with Uke chords and songs on that – which I can reccomend. I also now sometimes just play the uke chords on the 4 top strings of the normal guitar – which is really just changing key . A good way to learn about keys and have fun at the same time.

Do you play any other instruments?
Yes, piano, clarinet, harmonica. Give me any instrument and I will have a crack I must have got good musical genes from “someone!”

Tell us about your Ukulele.
Mum, Dad and I went to Hawaii in January and found a little store in Haleina called “Hawaii Music Supply” but you can order online at theukulelesite.com. I got a Cordoba mahogany tenor, with a high gloss finish. I love it!

What is your favourite song to play?
Finger picking “White Sandy Beach of Hawaii”

What is your least favourite chord to play?
At the moment it is Bb because the E string sounds dumb but practice makes perfect. If you asked me 12 months ago it was Em but now I love it!

Why ukulele?
Listening to Israel Kamakaiwo’ole first got me into it. My friends Dad showed me how easy it was, so I got a uke! Attending WUG each week and wanting to play better keeps me going.

Harmonica. I learnt the piano but have not kept the practise going.

I currently have a “KeAloha” uke. I purchased this in Warrnambool.

What is your favourite song to play?
I am enjoying the challenge of “Free Falling” by Tom Petty, this reminds me of my student teacher days in art class. I love the rhythm of this tune.

What is your least favourite chord to play?
I’m not fond of anything involving # or sudden unexpected digital gymnastics. C6 is a favourite chord.

Why ukulele?
The Uke is portable, popular, cheap and fun. I love how it sounds better when in concert with other ukes. Ukes are the best.

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
We bothed joined WUG in april 2013 and have been playing since then. Saw the group playing at the Irish Festival and liked what we saw.

Do you play any other instruments?
(Michael) Guitar, Harmonica, Recorder (sort of)
(Denise) Hasn’t played any other instrument.

Tell us about your Ukulele.
(Michael) Lanikai Concert, liked this uke because it had more mellow tone.
(Denise) Luna Soprano – all mahogany, liked the feel and the look.

What is your favourite song to play?
(Michael) I don’t have a favourite song, but I find it annoying when a song is played too fast to the way it was actually recorded.
(Denise) There are lots I like, when I can play one that sounds like the song I will like it better.

What is your least favourite chord to play?
(Michael) I don’t have problems with chords, it is the rhythm I fail to get onto.
(Denise) I think I’m the pnly left handed player in the group and I have found most chords challenging, I know most of the basic ones the B’s + E’s, I’m getting there.

Why ukulele?
(Denise) I had seen the group playing at a few venues and they sounded great and looked like they were having lots of fun, so I decided that’s what I wanted to do. Monday nights are very enjoyable, I keep playing cause one day it might sound good.
(Michael) She who must be obeyed said “I want to learn the uke”, was my inspiration.

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
June 2012 . started playing the ukulele the first night WUG group met at the Royal Hotel. My life wasn’t worth living if I hadn’t turned up that night. I had been engaged (told) that I was one of the teacher for the beginners

Do you play any other instruments?
Guitar, Bass guitar, mandolin and also attempt to play -banjo, clarinet, saxophone, violin and drum. I played side drums in the Warrnambool ladies pipe band many years ago.

Tell us about your Ukulele.
I love them, I have collected a few since I started playing, they are very additive. At last count I had five. My favourite is the Kala tenor travel uke -big sound, thin body.

What is your favourite song to play?
I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts. Why? because everyone sings it with gusto and it makes me smile.

What is your least favourite chord to play?
Haven’t found it yet (too lazy to play the difficult ones) I’m sure Victor will find me one now though.

Why ukulele?
Annie told me I had to play or else, – lets say Kevin and myself were given no choice!

The truth is after seeing Jake Shimabukuro playing his uke on spics and specs one night I was in awe and thought I would like to give that a go.

I thoroughly enjoy the wug group and the friendships that have been forged through this wonderful little instrument

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
Since Feb 2011

Do you play any other instruments?
Kazoo. It would take a person of far better character than I to walk past an instrument that sounds like a dying duck and not say ‘gimme’

Tell us about your Ukulele.
The ukulele I play the most is a concert Luna. I have absolutely no idea what it’s made from apart from ‘wood’. I didn’t care when I bought it and still don’t. It has a peace symbol cut out across the sound hole and has the word ‘peace’ carved in all different languages across the body in a swirling pattern. That’s for me. Regardless of what other ones come into my life, there will always be a special place for a peace promoting ukulele. (but if anyone wins lotto and wants to buy me an awesome handmade Steampunk styled uke, you just let me know, I’ll be up for it).

What is your favourite song to play?
What a mean question. How am I meant to pick a favourite?! Music is too ginormous to pick a favourite. I’ll randomly pick a few. So there.

Before I knew it by Basia Bulat – because it’s adorable

Rainbow connection by Kermit the Frog – because it’s KERMIT and learning that song cemented I could learn more than F and C songs

Dream a little dream of me by Mama Cass – because I love the song

Your Cheating Heart by Hank Williams (sorry Megan) – because it cracks me up when the group goes feral on ‘call my naee-aee- eeeeammmeeeeame’

What is your least favourite chord to play?
Chords that appear with a # in them don’t bode for good times ahead, mostly because I have it in my head that hashtags should stick to twitter

Why ukulele?
My favourite artist Amanda Palmer has been assuring everyone for years that it’s easy to play, added that ukuleles can be dirt cheap at $30. It’s not as intimidating as other instruments. It meant I could have a go and if I couldn’t do it or didn’t like it, it wouldn’t matter. A low risk investment! I am also obsessed by tiny houses and what better instrument than a ukulele right? I found it a challenge to learn to play right handed when I am a leftie through and through. Everything’s back to front peoples!! Eventually I got the hang of it though and couldn’t play as a leftie now if I tried, despite I still find strumming vaguely odd from time to time. As for musical theory – AHAAAAHAAAAHAAAAA – that’s like learning an alien language. Baby steps!

I keep playing the ukulele because it makes me smile a lot. It’s a happy noise. It can be really simple or really complicated, and it’s up to you in which direction you take it. It doesn’t matter either way. Witnessing the happy factor encourages others to give it a go. It’s inclusive. It brings people together and forges positive connections like seemingly few other instruments do. There is no downside to that.

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
I have been playing since March 2013. I saw an article in the local rag about a playout on the civic green and a notice of meeting times. I turned up at the Royal for ‘a look’ but immediately had a ukulele placed in hand and an essential crash course in essential chords! Others assisted by proferring ‘The Book’ and other handy tips on how to get along.

Do you play any other instruments?
I have a passing acquaintance with;
the recorder soprano and tenor, because they both have the same fingering, 25+yrs ago;
tin whistle to play those jigs and reels;
clarinet at high school for a year or two a few years ago now…;
progressed to about page 15 of a “Learn classic guitar” tome about 35 years ago;
equivalent page on bluegrass banjo about 5 years ago;
Alto saxaphone since sept 2013;
restarted recorder since sept 2013;
desperately want to play mandolin!
The only public performance had been with a recorder ensemble at the then Ballarat College graduation ceremony.

Tell us about your Ukulele.
My favourite uke: all of them, except for the tenor with the strings that hurt my fingers! I use a Dale Cleeves house brand concert uke for playouts ‘cos it is loud and shiny and really rings.

I’m currently favouring a concert Maton, crafted from blackwood tree with unique curly grain gathered from the Otways. It was a Cairns Ukulele Festival limited edition presented by the product developer for Maton. He let me play it every day. At the time I couldn’t justify it’s purchase. Festival over, he left it in a Cairns music shop. On my way to the airport via a music shop, it became mine. My soprano Luna was unceremoniously stuffed into cabin baggage and the Maton was carry-on. I thought that was to be the end of my uke envy….apparently not. Every time I lament that I might have too many ukes, some one always says they have more. I saw one the other day……

What is your favourite song to play?
My favourite song is the next one I am yet to master with that tricky chord progression or riff! …and page 100! I’ve just learned Wipeout and am working on picking(groan who hasn’t) Stairway to Heaven. Hank Williams is growing on me!

What is your least favourite chord to play?
My least favourite chord was Eminor then Bflat I just can’t change my finger position quick enough! ..nearly though. As I get the hang of the chords the next least favourite is of course the one(s) I can’t yet do.

Why ukulele?
I saw a doco about the ukulele on the t.v. and it demonstrated how versatile the uke could be. All types of music styles could be played. It could really give the guitar a run for it’s money. One did not have to play Tiptoe through the Tulips

In addition to that the learning environment; the inclusiveness of and encouragement by the W.U.G members allowed bumbling(burgeoning) technique and questionable singing to develop without chagrin. The ukulele has a happy sound which is very welcome. It’s very portable and is an excellent travelling companion. As I’ve improved (my judgement) I’ve been reminded that I’ve always wanted to be able to make music and love being able to finally make some. I’ve been inspired to pursue other musical possibilities. I want to be able to master an instrument; to aspire to play like Jake Shimbakuru or Liath Glas and others. Ukulele Mike makes me believe I will be able to play one day! I never dreamed I would perform anything in front of anyone but with uke in hand have done just that and sometimes unabashed. Go figure… Oh, I think the ukulele annoys guitar players. Oh and you can talk at the same time, or eat/drink, not like with a wind instrument and not when Annie or Kevin or Victor is talking!!! On Mondays, I don’t have to cook!

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
Best I can figure 28 years (1986), I did have a uke when I was very small but that was more for dragging around the house and hitting my little sister over the head with.

Do you play any other instruments?
A dog ate my panpipes but I think I’ve got a jaws harp somewhere

Tell us about your Ukulele.
I have so many its hard to choose, but my go to Uke would be my Maton Concert. Made in Melbourne it has a solid Victorian blackwood timber body, Queensland maple neck and Indian rosewood fingerboard and bridge. The nut and saddle are bone and the tuners are Gotoh UK700 with a 1:15 ratio. It came stringed with Aquilla nyguts but I have recently swapped them out for Martin fluro carbons, which have brightened the sound up to no end. Picked it up at Dale Cleaves in Warrnambool, it was love at first strum, just like all the others.

What is your favorite song to play?
Has to “Be Walk Right In”, I first learned it on guitar in primary school and it has been following be around ever since.

What is your least favorite chord to play?
E major in the first position, can never seem to get my fingers to contort in the proper fashion so I end up playing it barre.

Why ukulele?
To be honest its been so long I cant really remember. I think originally it was more to do with the eccentricity involved and portability but soon developed in to a deeper love as I discovered how versatile a uke can be.

How Long Have you been Playing Ukulele?
2 years (2012)

Do you play any other instruments?
Guitar and Mandolin

Tell us about your Ukulele.
I have a Tenor Koyama Iceberg Uke that I purchased from Dale Cleaves. It has the following features:
Top:Mahogany
Back:Mahogany
Sides:Mahogany
Fretboard:Rosewood
Bridge:Rosewood
I have had a L.R. Baggs Five. O Ukulele pickup inserted into my Uke. The reason I chose the L.R. Baggs Five. O is because it has a preamp and can thus be inserted into any amplification system. Pick-ups without a preamp often have problems with amplification.

What is your favorite song to play?
I don’t have a particular favorite but I do enjoy playing songs in the ilk of ‘Bill Bailey’, ‘Please don’t talk about me when I’m gone’, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ etc

What is your least favorite chord to play?
At the moment I haven’t explored the complete range of chords but I find that if I have a new chord to learn I just practice until I get it. There are chords like power chords that are not often played in the songs we sing but they do not have the same impact on the Uke as they do on the Guitar.

Why ukulele?
I picked up the Uke about two years ago while I was in Tasmania. Annie wanted to join a Uke group so she brought another little one for me to join her. I wasn’t very interested at first but when I saw the fun you could have playing the Uke I decided to learn the chord patterns. I am probably a guitar player who plays Ukulele but it does give another dimension to my playing. As they say if you haven’t got a smile on your face while you are playing the Uke then you shouldn’t be playing a Uke!!

Will try any new song but “Mack The Knife”, “Please Don’t Talk About Me When I’m Gone” and “Who’s Sorry Now” just to name a few.

What is your least favourite chord to play
Any chord that I have not played before.

Why ukulele?
Good Question. Waiting around for the guitarists in our garage covers band to actually start up a song after hours of discussion about how a song should be played. Can’t beat them, so join them with a twist of course- the ukulele. ps they are now converts also. What keeps me playing? the smiles.
